Valparaiso Police Department Awarded CALEA Accreditation on July 31st 2010

In January of 2004, Chief Brickner and his administrative staff started a review and analysis of the Valparaiso Police Department. The goal was to identify the strengths and areas of the department where updating or improvement would be useful. With various attributes of the department identified, they began making improvements.

The dynamic nature of Policing requires the review and analysis process to be constant. Without introspection, our ability to stay current with modern and acceptable Policing practices is at a disadvantage.

A police department can stay contemporary through accreditation. Accreditation is a proven method of guiding growth and change for organizations. Therefore, in July 2006, Chief Brickner made the decision to pursue accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement's major executive associations:

  • International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
  • National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE)
  • National Sheriffs' Association (NSA)
  • Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)

The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model. Once implemented, it presents the Chief of Police, on a continuing basis, with a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery — regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency.

Agencies can realize the following rewards of CALEA Accreditation:

  • Comprehensive, well thought-out written directives
  • Reports and analyses to make informed management decisions
  • Preparedness Program in place
  • Improved relationship with the community
  • Strengthen agency’s accountability
  • Limit liability and risk exposure
  • Assists in agency’s pursuit of excellence

With input from all agency members, the goal of accreditation will be attained. The citizens we serve and employees we work with will all be rewarded with an outstanding police agency.
